HIER Nigeria Facilitates Community Discussion in Lafia to Support Key Populations and People Living with HIV

HIER Nigeria, through its Community Engagement team, today facilitated a community discussion in Lafia aimed at strengthening support for key populations and people living with HIV (PLHIV).

The session was led by HIER’s Community Engagement Officer, Abubakar, and began with opening prayers, participant introductions, and a welcome address delivered on behalf of the Executive Director of HIER. The gathering created a safe and engaging space for participants to learn, share experiences, and discuss issues affecting their health and wellbeing.

A major focus of the discussion was education on HIV prevention, treatment, and the rights of people living with HIV. Participants also received essential prevention commodities, including condoms, lubricants, and HIV oral self-test kits, as part of efforts to improve access to health resources within the community. In addition, guidance was provided on effective health communication, the importance of follow-up support, and the need for regular health checks.

The interactive session also gave participants the opportunity to openly discuss the challenges facing their community. Among the concerns raised was the lack of support from other community-based organizations since February, a situation that has increased the need for sustained intervention and solidarity. Despite these challenges, participants expressed sincere appreciation to HIER for continuing to remember and support them during a difficult period.

The session concluded with a closing prayer, group photographs, and a renewed sense of hope for continued engagement and support.

This activity reflects HIER Nigeria’s ongoing commitment to promoting health, dignity, and human rights among underserved and marginalized communities, while ensuring that vulnerable groups are not left behind in access to care, information, and support.
